The 2019 NCBC Conference in Chicago was my 7th conference since 2011. While every NCBC conference I have attended over the years has provided me with stellar educational advancements and invaluable networking opportunities, the Chicago conference was one of the most personally valuable experience I’ve had at an NCBC Conference.
First, I was fortunate to be included in the large group of esteemed peers graduating from the very last class of the MSU’s Noncredit Certificate in Judicial Administration. I took 5 years to complete my courses and capstone project so the taste of that certificate in my hand was so very sweet. Even after 27 years performing in various capacities for my court, the Judicial Administration curriculum still managed to fill numerous gaps in my knowledge and experience. I encourage anyone hoping to leg up (or round out) their career with the U.S. Bankruptcy Courts to participate in the new LEAD program. You won’t be sorry.
Next year my court - the Central District of California - will host the NCBC Conference in Anaheim, California. I will be helping coordinate this effort so my objectives at the Chicago conference were to not only attend my educational breakout sessions and participate in the usual conference activities, but also to learn all about being a host court from the Northern District of Illinois gang. Jeff Allsteadt, Sharon Zurowski, Shenitha Burton and the whole ILN crew were extremely helpful and informative in this regard. Even in the thick of their hosting duties, they took time to share their experiences with me. They even lent a hand (many hands!) with our 2020 information booth. After the conference concluded, I returned to my court energized and loaded with bright ideas to help us plan our conference next year. Thank you ILN - I just love you guys.
And finally, a heartfelt thank you to NCBC President, Eddy Emmons, the NCBC Board of Governors and the NCBC Committees for their tireless efforts to pull these conferences together for all of us. The Bankruptcy Courts are extremely fortunate to have this annual opportunity to build the relationships that lead to a stronger bankruptcy community!
