Attending the 2019 NCBC conference in Chicago was a very exciting and informative experience. We began by building a bridge with Second City.
Their comedic take on bankruptcy matters and lessons on improvisation in the workplace helped get everyone in the mood for the upcoming week. Our plenary gatherings and educational breakout sessions featured a variety of topics from the power of empathy to phishing, effective communication, HR, cybercrime, and retirement planning.
This year, we had large number of MSU graduates who completed their Judicial Administration Certificate Program. The 5-year program was a compilation of 60 hours of coursework along with the completion of a capstone project. Some projects required surveys and data analysis, and some required interviews and research. Sadly, the program came to an end this year, but to keep up with the ever-growing need to further our education, the NCBC introduced a new leadership development program called the LEAD Academy.
The LEAD Academy is a new leadership pilot program where clerks will obtain skills on accomplishing goals, improving self-awareness, and becoming a positive influence in the workplace. New participants arrived early to attend their first workshop on Monday and were busy throughout the day. Members were paired up with mentors that will continue to assist with their 4-month journey. Even though we had to say goodbye to our MSU program, I am confident that this program will be a positive influence for all involved.
Lastly, InfoShare was a collaboration of many different offerings where bankruptcy clerks obtained information about new programs and ideas. A few of the vendors at the conference were the FJC, NCBC Mentorship Program and Benefits Committee, CHAP, Automated Docketing Interface, and CourtSpeak. As the marketing chair for the 2020 NCBC Conference at Anaheim, I had the opportunity to work California Central’s InfoShare booth to get everyone pumped about the Anaheim conference. We came prepared with Instagram cards, VisitAnaheim brochures, and a photo slideshow of what Anaheim and the surrounding areas have to offer. We created a fun-filled raffle basket containing a variety of summer-themed items that was given to the lucky winner at the closing ceremonies. It was a fun and busy year marketing for the conference, and we look forward to the time when we can welcome you to Anaheim!
