This scholarship meant a lot to me and helped me attend the NCBC Conference in Chicago. I look forward to NCBC each year because it always leaves me with a positive outlook on how to deal with work and life. This year, I really enjoyed two of the classes that were offered, the “Power of Empathy” and the “Instantly Improve your Memory” class. The “Power of Empathy” gave me more awareness on how to be a better person. Instead of feeling sorrow for someone, I learned that putting myself in the other person’s shoes or trying to understand their perspective would help me be a better friend and relate more to their experience. Being empathetic will show that you genuinely care for someone as opposed to being sympathetic. I took the “Instantly Improve your Memory” class because I wanted to improve my memory since I am bad with remembering names! In this class, we practiced a couple of exercises and different ways using pictures and rhyming words to numbers to improve memory. Towards the end of the class, I was able to remember at least 5 new people’s names, and talked to them after the class as well. Overall, the conference was a valuable experience!
