What was the time commitment for the program? How did you integrate that into your work-life balance?
I tried to commit at least two hours to each section of the Mentor Connect Workbook. I used my lunch hours for the reading assignments and viewed the video components outside of work.
Mentorship was a big component of the LEAD Academy. Can you share with us a bit about how the mentoring relationship has impacted you?
As a participant of the NCBC Mentorship program, I have had the opportunity to mentor others. This was my first time being a mentee. My mentor was fully involved with the program. His investment in my participation was very motivational to me.
As part of this program, participants completed a pre-conference workshop at the 2019 NCBC Conference in Chicago. Can you tell us a bit about what that was like?
The workshop at the conference in Chicago was terrific. The instructors prepared a highly energetic and involving series of lessons that engaged the entire class. Special shout-outs to Sandy Smith, Beverly Griffeth-Bryant, Lisa Haney, John Kohler, Barry Lander and Gina Zadra Walton for being the pilot instructors with the LEAD Academy. These folks were encouraging as well as enthusiastic throughout the day.
How has your participation in the LEAD Academy impacted your career?
The future impact of the LEAD Academy on my career has yet to be determined, but in the short time since the completion of the program, I have had several opportunities to refine and develop some of the leadership skills as set forth in my self-development plan.
Are there any additional thoughts you'd like to share with us?
I would like to thank the LEAD Academy Subcommittee members, Sandy Smith, Kathy Noel, Woody Parks, Melody Siefert, Jamie Smith, and Jan Zari for their hard work in getting the pilot program up and running. Kudos to everyone! I’d especially like to thank my mentor, Mo Wong from the Eastern District of Pennsylvania for his total commitment, enthusiasm and encouragement throughout the program. I encourage my fellow NCBC members to participate in future LEAD Academy programs as either a participant or as a mentor.
