The Federal Judiciary Benefits Program Open Season for the 2020 calendar year is just around the corner. The open season will begin on Monday, November 11, 2019, and run through Monday, December 9, 2019.
You should spend some time thinking about your health insurance coverage including reviewing your current coverage and determining what, if any, changes you should make for 2020.
Judiciary employees are eligible to participate in the Federal Employees Health Benefits (FEHB) Program. The FEHB Program provides comprehensive health care coverage for employees, retirees, and their families. Medical benefits include doctor’s office visits, preventative care, hospitalization, surgery, and prescription drugs.
Health insurance benefits and plans will vary based on your geographic location, but your share of your health care premiums are generally 30% with the remaining amount paid by the Judiciary. Premiums are conveniently deducted from your paycheck. You have the option of paying your premiums pre-tax, which can save you additional money.
FEHB gives you a choice of several different types of health care plans including:
· Fee for Service (FFS)
· Health Maintenance Organization (HMO)
· High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP)
· Consumer-Driven Health Plan (CDHP)
Some other advantages of FEHB include:
· Guaranteed coverage
· No waiting periods
· No restrictions on preexisting conditions
· No limitations on age
· Catastrophic protection for unusually high medical bills
· Coverage after retirement
· Coverage for survivor annuitants
· Coverage while on LWOP for up to 365 days
During Open Season, you can enroll, change health plans or options, add or remove dependents, and cancel your FEHB enrollment at the new Judiciary Benefits Center website (https://judiciary.lifeatworkportal.com). To learn more about FEHB visit the FEHB website hosted by OPM (https://www.opm.gov/healthcare-insurance/healthcare/).
