Last year, I received a scholarship to attend the NCBC Conference in Chicago. The conference is an opportunity to bring together different members from numerous courts, with a variety of positions, for the purpose of collaboration and learning. This conference took me to Chicago for the first time. What a beautiful city with so much adventure! From the pizza, to the architecture, I cannot wait to go back and explore more. The conference also provides many opportunities for an NCBC member. Not only do you get to experience brand new places, but you also get to learn from the wonderful breakout sessions you attend, and from the other members from different courts across the country.
Sessions I attended included, “A Motion to What?” “Who’s Behind the Curtain,” “Instantly! Improve Your Memory,” and “Dark Web.” The “A Motion to What?” session was a great refresher for the bankruptcy basics, which I believe anyone and everyone could benefit from. Even though I knew a lot of the information that was presented in this session, I still learned some new important items. I particularly loved the interactive poll that the instructors used while leading our seminar. During “Who’s Behind the Curtain,” a lot of material was provided regarding what happens with how budget decisions are made, and which individuals are required to make those difficult decisions. This session was an eye opener for me about decisions that are made in my own court, and how often some of these are not easy to make. Additionally, I loved the interactive scenario role playing we did where we had to put ourselves on the front line and make one of those difficult decisions. Further, “Instantly Improve Your Memory” was a great session to help with techniques for remembering, such as using sounds and shapes. Lastly, the “Dark Web” was an extremely interesting and eye-opening session. I will be sure to remain wary of certain links that I encounter, and, when in doubt, do not click!
I truly appreciate the opportunity my court and the scholarship gave me to attend and enjoy such a wonderful conference. Between the hilarious performances of Second City, the breakout sessions, the hosted events by NCBC at the Gwen and Navy Pier, to the closing plenary speaker, Randy Fox, I could not have asked for a greater experience In Chicago.
I would recommend this opportunity to any NCBC member who has never gone, and, if you are not an NCBC member, become one and take advantage of this huge benefit! I hope to see everyone at a conference again soon!
